About the Author, Osian Giles

The author, somewhat like Dr David Wilkins in the Night Owl books (though not a black-ops assassin!), uses an assumed name. He is qualified in medicine and surgery; has many years experience in night emergency medicine, general practice, occupational health and forensic medicine, and has worked as a Clinical Assistant in Psychiatry, delivering psychotherapy and hypnotherapy.

Doctors’ Lament

I have lived a thousand years through the eyes of other men,
wearied with their heartache, fears and pain.
Understood, more than I sought or cared to know.
Became, a wounded doctor, with broken heart, tormented brain.
One day, I’ll heal enough to put the scars on show,
begin to live my own life once again.

Osian obtained a BA first class honours degree in psychology, philosophy and creative writing; completed the first two years of a BSc (hons) in maths & chemistry and the first year of an MBA, the latter two regrettably unfinished due to time constraints. In addition to his medical career, Osian owned and ran several business enterprises, and was a Member of the Chartered Institute of Managers and the Institute of Directors.

Whilst all Osian’s novels are works of fiction, many contain fictionalised versions of real events occurring during his career and travels abroad. By necessity, in being ‘thrillers’, they concentrate on the darker side of life. Thankfully, most of Osian’s life has been blessed with trustworthy and altruistic people.

Osian wrote the first draft of his first novel, Treason, in about three months and thought that would be it. Within a month, he missed writing, wrote Shadows of the Past, a sequel, then Genesis, a prequel, to explain why his main character, David Wilkins a.k.a. Night Owl, turned out as portrayed. He wrote many more with David, as a forensic medical examiner, using his former ‘spy’ skills to achieve justice. First Mission followed as a bridge between Genesis and Treason. Whilst all Night Owl books can be read as stand-alone novels, they form a natural series relating to David’s exploits since his student days in 1973.

For the main characters, who appear in every novel, Osian attempted to adjust their personalities as they aged and endured (or enjoyed) more life experiences. He generally also tries to include some background for the nasty characters to enable the reader to understand the reasons for their behaviour.
